The Way Ahead Is Organic Gardening

There are instances when people would be attracted to certain ways of doing things but in the very long term, the defects of the system could be apparent.  This is best how to describe the adoption of gardening practices over a period of time in the past. The introduction of chemical agents to gardening did bring in benefits that stressed the role of affordability at best.  But as time progressed, the ill effects of the chemical forms became apparent to one and all that got to use the method.

Rather than just a fad, the organic gardening practices are the way forward and how it benefits the community, in the long run, can be discussed in brief below.

Better Soil Condition In The Garden

The first casualty in using chemical substances in gardening is the deterioration of the soil.  One about the earth is that it is rarely possible to correct the large scale damage that people subject it to in a time-bound as well as a cost-effective manner.  As time-consuming as the decline in soil quality is the time needed to restore the soil to its earlier form. But the cost involved is really immeasurable on most occasions.

With going organic, the most advantageous situation is that soil quality does not get worse with use. In fact, if proper care is taken, then the total condition of the soil could be improved over a certain time period.

Environmentally A More Preferable Option

It is well past the time that more people paid sufficient attention to the quality of water people drink as well as the state of air people breathe.  The extensive use of chemicals not just in gardening alone has brought on a situation that most water sources are contaminated beyond use and as for the atmosphere, it certainly needs a bit of scrubbing.

Considering the costs to set right the wrongs due to indiscriminate use of chemical agents, the more preferred method would be to use these elements as few as possible in life.  The increased stress on educating the using public has created a more favorable and receptive society to going organic all the way.

This small start must be built on to take organic practices to still more applications as well as farther places in society.

The All-Important Cost Factor In Going Organic

Despite the best efforts at educating the public to the ill effects of using chemical elements in gardening as well as in extensive farming, a lot of people still persevere with the old methods simply because it is the more affordable option.  It is when the new organic practices take a center stage that the organic practices achieve scales of economy that is so crucial in such situations.

Thus costs are bound to come down as a natural course of action.  It is the classical case of the chicken and egg. But a start has to be made and it should be with organic practices in gardening as it happens to be a more focused approach that can at best be demonstrative.

Using Native Plant Forms For The Garden

There are of course advantages to using native plant forms for the garden no matter the location and season.  If more than anything, the use of native forms have taken precedence over the more popular variety of plants for the simplicity as well as the ease of maintenance that they provide the premise owner at most times.  A more in-depth look at the practice is done in the following points below.

Adaptation

Even the plant kingdom needs to adapt to the conditions that prevail at a place and it is no surprise that most alien species of the plant do need to adapt considerably in certain situations than others.  The focus on using things like budding as also the modern practices of tissue culture is to make the foreign plant form be more locally suitable. But it must be pointed out that certain conditions are simply not attainable no matter the efforts expended in it.  This is where the native variety of plants thrives and to good effect too.

Cost-Effective

The old world view that plants just need a bit of watering and nothing more no longer holds true; be it the native variety or the alien species of plants.  Most gardens do need periodic maintenance and this could be more than just the usual weeding operations in most cases. The more complex the processes involved the more expensive it would turn out to be.  Thus, the need to balance a budget particularly when there would be little by way of return to show, is what makes a lot of people prefer the native variety of plants.

Durable And Adaptable

The average person would tend to think that where do plants need to be adaptive?  It is so for a variety of reasons and the climate can be the most contributing factor to be adaptive at most times.  The very extreme temperatures, either the cold or heat, would affect the plants adversely. It is the same effect that people have when they are introduced in situations that are so extreme as well.

It is the native species of vegetations that are capable of being adaptable in most situations.  Often people tend to introduce foreign plants into very harsh physical situations like the dessert or the cold snowy climates, for the sheer novelty.  This effort can be at most times failure and even if there is a possibility that it could turn out a success, the expenses involved would be horrendous.

Environmentally Friendly Option

Foreign species of plants are rather environmentally harmful for reasons that are quite not that apparent. The most strange climate and conditions that a foreign plant gets to experience would need expensive and environmentally harmful chemicals, like pesticides and fungicides, to sustain the plants in the new surroundings.

This does have a detrimental effect on the environments and even the water table in a location.  With the use of native species, they do require little maintenance and the least use of chemical fortification at any time.

On the walkway of your lawn, maintain the considerable distance between the offset lights. Locate some lightening entirely in the garden bed and remaining onto the lawn path. First, have a clear idea of all parameters and then place the lights so that you can navigate through the lawn area in nights with enough brightness. Always, Keep in mind that, even moonlight gives little light at night to help you as well.

Best Ways To Take Care of Lawns During Summer

Lawn care at spring season is done to make them greener and healthier. Whereas, summer lawn care is done mainly to keep them perfect and healthy because in summer, temperatures soar and rainfall get reduced. It is also important to maintain a lawn in summer as you can enjoy games, barbecues, parties and many more enjoyable events that summer has to offer. Here are some great tips for maintaining your lawn in shape over those hot days of summer.

Just like humans, lawns even feel little bit stress as spring season go and summer season comes. The heat of the summer damages the greenery to a little extent. If you want your lawns to be lush and green during summer, then you should fight with nature by constantly continuing to water and fertilize. Even in summer, cool-season grasses such as bluegrass grow best until the temperature is 60s F. On the other hand,warm-season grasses like Augustine and centipede grow till temperatures are the 70s.
Once these temperatures rise to 80s and above, the lawns will struggle a little and mainly cool-season grasses will have the hardest time. Because of high temperatures, the colour will fade and growth becomes slow. These all make lawns to show signs of wear and tear as flowers and trees are always less able to recover from stress and traffic. However, by understanding seasonal changes and by following few tips you can make your lawn to look more beautiful and to be healthier even in summer.

Never Forget To Water And Make It Wisely

As water content in the air becomes very less during summer, it is compulsory to water lawns perfectly. You should water wisely during summer. Lawns need one inch of water per week, and sometimes it may require even more when the heat from the sun is severe. It is best to rain gauge so that you can measure the amount of water received by plants. You should water the lawn deeply but less frequently. Watering them early in the morning is the best thing you can do to reduce fungal growth as well as evaporation. If your lawn becomes dormant or brown in summer, let it stay in the same way until it falls because it will recover as soon as weather changes.

Tips For Mowing

Mowing regularly is the main thing you have to do in summer. Taller grass will be more tolerant to drought. During summer, cool-season grasses like bluegrass should be mowed at least  3” to 4” or more till your blade go. Whereas, warm-season grasses can be mowed at 2” to 3”. It is compulsory to Mow regularly as it is not preferable to mow more than one by third of the grass blade at a time. Following these steps, keeps your grass healthier. It also helps to prevent the clippings from smothering the grass. While mowing, be sure that you are cutting the grass and not tearing it. It even minimises the stress that is caused because of high temperatures. It is also must to keep your mower blades sharp.

How to build a retaining wall in your backyard

Retaining walls are great solutions for a sloping yard. Pools, patios and play areas all need a solid, flat surface on which to exist. With the right retaining wall design, your family can enjoy your backyard safely.

There are a few considerations before beginning a garden or landscape retaining wall design project. The type of wall you will build depends on the slope of the ground above the wall, the type of soil in your yard and how much soil will be weighing down on the wall when it is complete.

The higher the wall you plan to build, the more force will be exerted upon it by the hillside the wall is retaining. The force could become so great that it will push the hillside over the top of your wall and crush it. For these reasons, anyone needing to build a wall higher than four feet should consider hiring experts.

There are a number of different colors and styles of retaining wall stones. Before you settle on a final decision for your yard, take a drive around the neighborhood and see if there are any ideas you could see in your yard.

Most retaining walls are made from wood, natural stone or concrete. For the beginner, consider the pre-cast concrete wall stones. These stones are made with a lip on the back that locks them together without any mortar. The stones generally resist pressure from dirt and give the wall a “step back” and curved look. The biggest drawback to this design is its height. The interlocking stones are not generally recommended for walls higher than three feet. Seek professional advice about the correct materials and price estimates before beginning the project. A landscape design company will help you make the best decision for your yard and your budget.

Should you choose the inter-locking stones, there are a few items you need before leaving the landscaping store. To complete the project, you will need a shovel, tape measure, wood stake and string, level, wheel barrel, soil tamper, gravel, landscaping stones, work gloves and goggles. Be sure to ask someone at the landscaping store if you need any additional materials.

  • Begin your project by digging a trench 8″-10″ deep and 6″ wider than the block where you would like the wall to be. Fill the trench with 6″ level compacted gravel. Start laying the stones in the trench and checking each for level from side to side and front to back After the first layer is complete, begin laying your second layer of stones in a running bond pattern. If your first level was even, the second should be as well, keep checking You can use a string to ensure the stones remain level and straight. After you completed the first two levels, add drainage pipe along backside of first layer of block and cover with clean washed gravel, backfill the block (unless solid block is being used) with crushed stone 1/4″ to 1-1/2″ in size with less than 10% fines and fill behind the stones with 12″ of same crushed stone. Continue placing the stones until you have reached the desired height repeating the above steps every two layers.

Once you are finished adding levels to your wall, place landscaping fabric against the stones. This will keep the dirt from pushing through the stones and buckling the wall. Add topsoil and level off the soil along the top of the wall. From here, you can be creative and add flowers, plants or other landscaping elements.

The Art Of Designing Landscapes

The plantation in gardens and preparing a landscape involves proper planning and designing. This process is referred to as the garden design. The art of garden designing is loved by many garden owner and they themselves create the plans while some prefer relying on professionals as they have the expertise to perform these tasks and also a high level of experience in this field.

The professional designers have knowledge on horticulture. They have training on the principles of designs. There are some designers who are landscape architects and goes through a more formal training as compared to other garden designers. The possession and choice of an expert designer is the key to get a flawless garden designing done.

For beginners, one needs to practice for long hours on their own land as this helps them to gain experience. They can also learn through studies or by attending programs or by becoming a member of a garden club.

Learning garden design principles

Learning about lines in garden designing is important as everything is related to it and they are the basic elements of designing. Learning about lining eases the work of garden designing, for example, the horizon at a distance, the trunk of plants and trees, the line at the end of a yard or lawn, beginning of a wood and many more.

The most readily accepted designs for garden landscapes are fences, sidewalk, and the driveways. This addition is one of the most common patterns that are marked from a garden design perspective. The lines can be varied and can be proportioned according to choice in the form of straight, curved, vertical, and horizontal layouts. Each of the layouts is similar only the effect they impose for visualization differs according to choices and perceptions.

Irrespective of the designs for these lines in the garden, it tends to be the main center of attraction that leads the eyes. The lines impose a sense of stability in an informal way towards the path in which one moves.

Maintenance of garden designs

The vitality of the regular garden maintenance after completion of the designing part is important. This is because the designs might become crooked and with the growth of the trees and the herbs. There are a lot of service agencies that maintain the garden designs and provide maintenance services at regular interval of time to keep the designs intact and as visually charming as they were immediately after the design work was done. There are also service agencies who can keep an eye for any pest infestation in your landscape.

These services mainly include various aspects like pruning, hedging, mowing, winter reliefs, and weed controlling programs to maintain the charm of the designed gardens both at commercial, as well as residential spaces. The services also include season cleanup procedures where the cleaning is done with all the necessary requirements for the changes in the seasons.

For the preservation of the values and the aesthetic sense of the garden designs, it requires maintenance. This is to ensure that the plants grow at their best and the landscape looks attractive and flawless.

Landscape Lighting

One of my favorite holiday activities is crowding the family into a vehicle to view the holiday lights. From the simple white lights and wreaths to the bright flashing, multi-colored bulbs and large inflatable figures, holidays are at their worst entertaining and at their best gorgeous and inspiring. Believe it or not, but here was a time when darkness fell, people went inside to the safety, warmth, and light of their homes. The fact was, it was neither inviting or practical to spend time outside. Not only could you not see where you were walking, but additionally, the environment wasn’t welcoming.

While, I doubt few people would suggest you keep your holiday lights out all year round, you can add drama and a beauty of light to your home all year round through landscape lighting. It is amazing how little light is necessary to make a huge impact on your landscape. Something as simple as a backlight with a few low voltage spotlights pointed from the base of your house up onto the home can make a huge impact. Light is a great way to highlight the beautiful aspects of your home and lawn. If you have beautiful trees, they can be backlit for a dramatic effect. If you have a wonderful door, a spotlight or gas lamps can do the trick. Additionally, lighting effects, such as a high quality park light or a lighted park bench, can create a classy, urban effect and transform your outdoor landscape into a relaxing and elegant atmosphere.

Directional path lighting spaced from eight to ten feet apart on alternate sides of a walkway can illuminate and is not just practical, but beautiful as well. While there is little doubt that landscape lighting can be beautiful, it also has more practical uses. For one, the addition of light to your lawn and walkways makes them more safe to walk. Using low voltage spotlights or directional path lighting, you can ensure that family and visitors alike can safely walk to your doorstep without turning an ankle or tripping over obstacles hidden by darkness. From a safety standpoint, landscape lighting also discourage intruders. After all, darkness only offers opportunities for potential predators to sneak up unseen to your home. Adding light makes sure anyone who approaches your house can do so in full view. Motion detection lights are a great way to protect against anyone with less than pure motives as they approach your home by illuminating when they sense motion. Motion lights are also a green solution because they ensure that lights don’t need to be on for a prolonged period of time, only when you need them to be on. Helpful tips to winterize your Lawn

Keeping up with the seasonal changes and how they effect your lawn is one of the most challenging parts of being a homeowner. However, the preparation and upkeep during the winter months are one of the integral aspects in the health of your lawn. While grass is dormant during the winter, preparation during the fall months make a big difference in how your grass will look come spring. By following a few simple tips, your lawn can remain healthy through the winter and be vibrant as it enters the spring months.

The first step needs to take place in early fall, and that is to reseed and fertilize. A thorough reseed and fertilization early in the fall not only fills in patches left as warm weather weeds die off and leave bare on your lawn, but it also insures that as spring comes, that weeds won’t come back and take hold in the bare spots they vacated. By fertilizing, you can do wonders for the underground health of your grass as it develops and strengthens the root system which is essential for a lush lawn.

Next, make sure that all debris and leaves are raked off of the lawn and garden areas. It is essential to keep your lawn and garden free of junk, which cut off air and can be a place for pests to hide. Additionally, if you have snow during the winter, leaves left on your lawn will cause drying and make it prone to mold and disease.

For some lawns, particularly those which receive a lot of foot traffic, aeration can be helpful. Grass takes a beating during the summer months with foot traffic and gardening, and compaction can be a huge problem. Compaction compresses the natural spaces in the soil where oxygen invigorates the roots and deprives the roots of their full metabolic process. Aeration helps to overcome compaction by providing oxygen to the roots of the grass. A simple punch-core aerator can do the trick and open up spaces within the soil.

Before the harsh winter and snow, it is a good idea to mow your lawn one last time, but to adjust your mower to get a particularly close cut. A good rule of thumb is to cut down the grass to about one inch in length. Finally, in late October, a second feeding and fertilization is the last step necessary to keep your lawn strong through the winter. However, this depends on where you live as fertilizing too late in the season can cause the grass to continue to grow and can leave it susceptible to frost damage.
